Habit Stacking: Unlocking higher Productivity in Business & Life

In a fast-paced world filled with endless distractions and competing priorities, finding ways to boost productivity has become paramount for businesses and individuals alike. One powerful technique that has gained significant traction in recent years is habit stacking. By leveraging this effective strategy, professionals can enhance their daily routines, increase efficiency, and ultimately achieve their goals with greater ease. In this blog post, we will delve into the concept of habit stacking, explain how to implement it, and provide practical examples of its impact on enhancing productivity within a business setting.

Understanding Habit Stacking

Habit stacking, as coined by James Clear in his book "Atomic Habits," refers to the practice of latching a new habit onto an existing one in order to streamline positive behaviour change. It harnesses the power of habits by capitalising on the automatic nature of our existing routines. By pairing new behaviours with established ones, habit stacking helps to create a strong association in our minds, making them more likely to become automated and deeply ingrained in our daily lives.

So how to do you do it?

Ø  First Identify your current habits: Start by recognising your existing habits or routines. These could be activities you perform automatically without much conscious effort, such as brushing your teeth, making coffee, or checking your email first thing in the morning.

Ø  Next, define your desired habits - Determine the new habits you want to develop in order to improve productivity. These could include activities like reading industry news, setting daily priorities, or like me, you may wish to prioritise prayer and reading your Bible – just sets the day off right!

Ø  Identify anchors: Analyse your current habits to find natural anchor points that can serve as triggers for the new habits. This could be a specific time of the day, a particular location, or even an emotional state.

Ø  Stack the habits: Create a clear plan by linking the desired habits to the identified anchors. For example, if you aim to read industry news daily or a passage from the good Book, you can stack it onto your morning coffee routine.

Ø  Start small and build momentum: Begin with easily achievable habits and gradually incorporate more ambitious ones over time. Starting small allows for a sense of accomplishment, helping to reinforce the habit-stacking process.

Example: Boosting Productivity in Business

Imagine a startup founder we’ll call her Emma for the sake of this article,  who struggles to stay organised and maximise her productivity. By implementing habit stacking, she has managed to transform her daily routine and significantly improve her business performance.

Morning Routine:

1. Anchor habit: After Emma finishes her morning workout.

2. Desired habit: Setting daily priorities.

By habit stacking, Emma intentionally sits down with her planner immediately after her morning workout, following the cue of exercise completion. This helps her immerse herself into the planning process seamlessly, ensuring that she enters her workday with clarity and focus.

Office Routine:

1. Anchor habit: After Emma’s lunch break.

2. Desired habit: Reviewing performance metrics

Emma leverages her lunch break as an anchor to create the habit of reviewing key performance metrics. By doing so, she can assess her team's progress, identify areas for improvement, and make timely adjustments to drive better results.

End-of-Day Routine:

1. Anchor habit: Before Emma leaves the office or for all you WFH people – close down the laptop!

2. Desired habit: Reflecting on the day's accomplishments and learnings.

By habit stacking, Emma incorporates a brief reflection exercise into her daily routine just before leaving the office/finishing for the day. This final step enables her to consolidate her achievements, identify lessons learned, and set the stage for continuous personal and business growth.

Habit stacking is a powerful technique that can significantly boost productivity in both your business or improving your personal growth. By consciously associating desired habits with existing routines, anyone can effortlessly integrate positive behaviours into their daily lives. Whether it be setting priorities, reviewing metrics (just me then!?), or reflecting on accomplishments, habit stacking ensures that over time these activities become automated, leading to enhanced focus, efficiency, and overall success. Start implementing habit stacking today, and unlock the full potential of your productivity!
